What is a "Site Sale" and when do they
occur?
Simply put, a "site sale" is the term
used by the industry to refer to when the DeBeers Diamond Trading Company
(DTC) offers uncut diamond rough for sale to a specific list of diamond
manufacturers. These manufacturers are the "cutters" who produce the
diamonds that we offer for sale on our Private
Reserve. The diamond manufacturers authorized by The DTC to buy
diamond rough at the site sales are known as "site holders". At the
beginning of 2003 there were approximately one hundred site holders
authorized to buy diamond rough from DeBeers, however the DTC changed
their marketing strategy in June of 2003 and initiated their "Supplier of
Choice" (SOC) program. The DTC revoked the charter of many of the
site holders and the actual number of SOC Site Holders is presently
unknown. Over the years, the number of site holders has varied from
approximately fifty to one hundred companies.
Site Sales occur about every five weeks and at that time The DTC releases
diamond rough into the market. The DTC controls the amount of
diamond rough that is released and the type of diamond rough that is
released in an attempt to maintain the stability of diamond prices.
This is why there are times when there is an abundance of certain carat
weights and combinations of color and clarity and other times when those
goods are scarce. If you are experiencing difficulty finding the
diamond of your dreams, there is the possibility that The DTC will release
the diamond rough that is needed to produce the diamond you are looking
for at their next site sale, or it may not be released for several
months... Because we prefer to opt on the side of optimism, the Site
Sale schedule 2004 is listed below, however we would like those of you
infected with Terminal Optimism to grasp these very important concepts:
-
Less than 1/10th of 1% of a
million round brilliant diamonds produced will have zero ideal cut
proportions!
-
There will NOT be a site sale
during the months of May or December of 2004. For those of you
planning a December or New Years engagement, this means that the October
site sale is the last opportunity for the diamond you have been waiting
for to reach the market by mid-December... The diamond rough
released at the November site sale will not really reach the open market
until the beginning of February 2005. Thus availability is
essentially limited to "stock on hand" for the months of November,
December and January...
Once the Suppliers of Choice complete
their transaction with The DTC, the diamond rough will be transported to
their manufacturing facilities via armored transport. Once the
diamond rough arrives at the cutting facility, it will be sorted to
determine how best to use each piece of the rough to maximize the yield
and profit from each piece... Then the cutting process begins...
Several weeks later, the finished diamonds will be sent to the various
diamond grading laboratories for grading and then the process of selling
the diamonds to vendors like ourselves begins... From start to
finish, it will take about eight weeks for the new diamond production to
reach the public market.
January: Monday 12th to Friday 16th
February: Monday 16th to Friday 20th
March: Monday 22nd to Friday 26th
April: Monday 26th to Friday 30th
May: no sale scheduled. The five week schedule for the site sales
happens to fall within the Spring Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom where
The DTC is located...
June: Tuesday 1st to Friday 4th
July: Monday 5th to Friday 9th
August: Monday 16th to Friday 20th
September: Monday 20th to Friday 24th
October: Monday 25th to Friday 29th
November: Monday 29th to Friday 3rd
December: no sale scheduled. Most of the diamond
manufacturers will stop production in the middle of the month and will not
re-open until the middle of January so that they may spend the holidays
with their families.
