Canadian Diamonds
Diamonds from Canada? Absolutely!
Our neighbors to the North entered the world diamond market arena in 2002.
Beyond the romance of a chunk of "Ice" pulled from the glacial depths of
the icy Canadian tundra is the knowledge that the diamond rough that the
diamond was produced from was sourced from a conflict free region under
humane circumstances.
Mental Note to Self
Diamonds produced from
diamond rough sourced from Canada = "Conflict Free"
Translated, that means "it is not a blood
diamond" for those of you who may not be familiar with the current rants
of Hollywood who hopped on the Conflict Free Diamond Bandwagon when it
became popular to do so after the events of 9/11, when rumors abounded
that the terrorist venture was funded by the sale of black market
diamonds mined from the Sierra Leone.
This rumor was later proven to be false, but nonetheless we're still
hearing about it on a daily basis and the recent release of
The Blood Diamond Movie is likely
to contribute to public concern when in fact the World Diamond Council
beat Hollywood to the punch years ago by implementing the
Kimberly Diamond Act.
The concept of a "conflict free" diamond has obvious social and mental merit, however
real world availability is extremely limited at this time, especially for zero
ideal cut diamonds which meet our strict selection criteria. Thus
if your desire is for an ideal cut diamond of verifiable Canadian origin
which also meets our strict selection criteria,
it will be extremely beneficial if your desire is also accompanied by
the luxury of time, because we've been looking for a 0.60 carat, F-G
color, VS clarity diamond of verifiable Canadian origin for about a year
now for one of our clients and thus far everything which we've managed
to lay our hands on weighs over a carat and well exceeds his desired
price range... And he only wants a Canadian diamond because he happens
to be Canadian and thinks that it would be cool. Canadian...
Ice... Cool... Get it? No? Uh, okay... Canadian... Ice... Hockey...
Molson Golden? Yea, we thought so.
On occasion, there will be a few diamonds
listed within our Private Reserve
which are of verifiable Canadian origin which will be specified as such within
the description located at the top of the diamond details page which is
available via the "full details" link that appears with each diamond
listing. However be forewarned that there seem to be very few
ideal cut diamonds of Canadian origin which meet the minimum
requirements of our initial "by the numbers" paper screening of the
characteristics of the diamond, let alone very many that make it through
our evaluation process. At this moment in time, it would be more
appropriate to say that we are looking forward to being able to offer
our clients a steady supply of precisely manufactured, ideal cut
diamonds of Canadian origin. However the majority of what we seem
to be currently offered by the few diamond cutting firms which represent
Canadian diamond rough is falling short of our expectations in terms of
precision.

If you happen to be a cutter who works
with Canadian diamond rough and you're offended by this statement then
we hope that you will contact us with a list of AGS or GIA graded round
brilliant ideal cut diamonds, all with AGS Ideal or GIA Excellent
polish, symmetry and proportions with total depth measurements between
59 - 61.8% and table diameters between 53 - 57.5% and crown angles
between 34.3 - 34.8 degrees and pavilion angles between 40.6 - 40.9
degrees. Heck, we're willing to bend on the crown angles a little
bit if you manage to get the rest right! We're not interested in
"ideal cut diamonds" which have been crafted with broad brush strokes
and we're not looking for near ideals, close to ideals or diamonds which
would be ideal for you to sell... We're looking for the real deal, if
you've got it, contact us with the list. If you don't have it, be
offended by our rant for an hour or so and then tighten your wheel and
start providing us with what we need.

At present there are two significant diamond mines operating in Canada,
one is the
Diavik Diamond Mine
located in the Yellowknife, Northwest Territories of Canada which is
operated in part by the
Rio Tinto Mining Group
and by Aber Diamond Mines
Ltd. Just as a point of interest, the Rio Tinto Mining Group
also owns the famous Argyle Diamond Mine in Australia which produces
mostly Champagne & Cognac colored diamonds... That's fancy brown for
those of you who might not be familiar with that production.
The second source for Canadian diamonds is the
Ekati Diamond
Mine which is also located in the Yellowknife region of the
Northwest Territories of Canada which is owned and operated in part by
the BHP Billiton
Mining Group and and geologists Charles E. Fipke and Dr. Stewart E.
Blusson (10% each). Diamonds sourced from the Ekati Diamond Mine
are eligible for registration in the
Canadamark
program which provides verification that the diamond rough was mined
from Canada and that the diamond was cut within the guidelines of the
Canadamark program.
There are several diamond cutting companies that purchase diamond rough
from the Rio Tinto and Aber diamond distribution pipe line, just as
there are several companies that purchase diamond rough from the
DeBeers
Diamond Trading Company (DTC) and then sell their production to a
multitude of diamond dealers like ourselves. The majority of
diamond cutting companies that source their diamond rough from Canada
export the diamonds to their manufacturing facilities in Israel, Belgium
or China.
