The "Cushion Cut" Diamond:
A "Cushion Cut Diamond" is
squarish - rectangular in shape with rounded corners and 58
brilliant-style facets that kind of resembles a pillow in shape, hence
the name... Cushion cut diamonds were developed about a hundred
years ago when diamonds were ground down to the desired shape instead of
being cleaved or sawn by laser and thus older cushion cut diamonds were
lumpy and thick which resulted in blocky patterns of light return which
were more or less unimpressive. As with most diamond shapes, the
modern cushion cut diamond has benefited substantially from advancements
in diamond cutting and design. The modern cushion cut diamond is
extremely lively and exhibits a high degree of light return.
There are no established "ideal proportions" for a cushion cut
diamond, however there are cushion cut diamonds which are clearly more
beautiful than others as a result of the attention to detail during the
cutting process. We have contracted with one of the cutters who we
rely on for the production of our ideal cut round brilliant cut diamonds
to produce a very special production of cushion cut diamonds which are being cut for
beauty as opposed to weight... Our cushion cut diamonds are produced to
the highest standards and have been graded by the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory
(GIA-GTL) as having Excellent Polish & Symmetry which is the highest
rating available from GIA Laboratory for these characteristics and is quite difficult to
achieve! It is a difference that is apparent not only to ourselves,
but also to customers in our store... Practically every time we
have shown a new customer one of our cushion cut diamonds
they have said something like "That's a cushion cut?!?! But I've seen
cushion cut diamonds and didn't think that they were this pretty!" and
we don't keep the diamond grading lights on all the time in our office so
we take that as a real compliment! Just so you know, we like to
keep the diamond lights off in the store when people shop for diamonds
because then people are buying their diamonds under the same lighting
conditions that they live and work under. We can turn them on
for people who want to see what their diamond would look like under
traditional jewelry store lighting which is designed to make crushed
rock quartz look pretty...
Our current inventory of Cushion Cut Diamonds can be found
in our Private Reserve of Fancy Shapes however
you should
Email us
if you don't see what you're looking for because we don't stock as many
Cushion Cut Diamonds as we have access to... The reality is that
cushion cut diamonds represent an emerging market and we invest most of our
working capital in round brilliant
ideal cut diamonds and pull what we need in the way of Cushion Cut
Diamonds from the cutter as we need it... Essentially we stock just
enough to let you know that we sell them ☺
