Princess Cut Diamonds

The princess cut diamond is a square brilliant with sharp, uncut corners. Princess cut diamonds are generally cut in the shape of a perfect square. As indicated by the plotting diagram of the facet structure above, the crown (upper) and pavilion (lower) facets are structured vertically, instead of being structured horizontally as is typical of older step-cut diamonds such as the emerald cut. Princess cut diamonds generally have 76 facets, however the facet structure can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer as there are differences in design.

We prefer princess cut diamonds which are shaped to as near a perfect square as possible. A perfect square has a length to width ratio of 1.00:1.00 which is determined by dividing the average length by the width. For instance a one carat princess cut diamond of ideal proportions might have a length of 5.33 mm and a width of 5.32 mm which would be expressed as a length to width ratio of 1.00:1.00 which is desirable. However the diamond could also be cut a little elongated, such as a length of 5.48 mm and a width of 5.33 mm which would result in a length to width ratio of 1.03:1.00 which is still pretty square, but which is less desirable than a near perfect square.
