Eighternity™ Diamonds
We are proud to be one of the first
authorized dealers in the United States for the Eighternity™
Brand Ideal Cut Diamond. The first time you lay your eyes upon an
Eighternity™ Diamond you will
realize that it is dramatically different than any other round brilliant
cut diamond that you have seen and we're willing to bet that you're
going to have a difficult time taking your eyes off of it.
The
Eighternity™ Diamond is a
modified round brilliant which offers a degree
of visual performance that is comparable to a round brilliant super
ideal cut diamond, but does so in a manner which is more dispersed in
the form of smaller pinpoint flashes of light as opposed to the broad
flash pattern displayed by a modern round brilliant. The
Eighternity™ Diamond exhibits smaller
pinpoint flashes of light as opposed to broad flashes because it has a
different facet structure than a modern round brilliant. The
Eighternity is cut with eighty one facets divided into equal
sections of facets arranged in combinations of eight or sixteen
depending on the section with the table facet being counted as the eighty first facet. A
modern round brilliant cut diamond has fifty six facets arranged as
described on this page.
It is important to note that more facets does not necessarily mean more
light return, but rather a slightly different pattern of light return.
Determining which type of light return you prefer is the intent of this
page.
Brilliance, Dispersion & Scintillation Defined
To ensure that we are on the same page in terms of the definitions used on this page, when we use the term "Brilliance" we are referring to reflected white light. When we use the term "Dispersion" or "Fire" we are referring to the flashes of colored light (red, orange, yellow, blue, purple and green) that are reflected by the diamond. And when we use the term "Scintillation" we are referring to the effect of light passing through the diamond and being reflected back to the viewer as the diamond or the viewer moves. When we purchase diamonds for inventory one of the factors that we evaluate is the degree of Brilliance and Dispersion as well as the virtual balance of those factors as well as the degree of Scintillation. Diamonds not meeting our expectations for all three factors are eliminated during our evaluation process and returned to the diamond cutters to be sold to other dealers who may be less discriminating.
Pinpoint vs. Broad Flash Refraction
If you take a close look at the picture of the Eighternity™ Diamond pictured at the top of this page you will see that the light is dispersed in a pattern similar to what you might see out of a kaleidoscope. The picture exhibits the myriad of reflective facets provided by the facet structure of the Eighternity™ Diamond. This picture was taken using a light source which filtered out many of the reflective properties of the diamond in order to exhibit the white light reflective properties of the diamond and not the dispersive properties. Look at the facet structure and how the facet structure affects the reflective surfaces of the diamond and how those surfaces reflect light and dark in different areas of the diamond... It is these areas that provide the superior scintillation offered by the Eighternity™ Diamond and which do such a wonderful job of directing the light which enters an Eighternity™ Diamond back toward the viewer who is showered with a sprinkle of brilliance and dispersion that is truly impressive.

When viewed through a Gems Fantasy Scope, Hearts & Arrows Viewer or similar device this is how the Eighternity™ Diamond appears. An eight pointed double headed star is visible from a top down view of the crown and a variegated flower type of pattern is seen from a pavilion down vantage point.

All of our Eighternity™ Diamonds are graded by the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory and accompanied by a Gem Ex Brilliance Scope Light Performance Analysis and reflect a rating of at least High for Brilliance (white light), Dispersion (colored light or fire) and Scintillation.
All Eighternity™ Diamonds are inscribed with the Eighternity™ Trademark and the number from the corresponding diamond grading report number as issued by the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory.
We've thought about this a lot...
We were first introduced to the Eighternity™ Diamond in July of 2004 and carefully evaluated the diamonds over the course of a five month period before introducing them in our store as an alternative for people seeking the improved visual performance offered by our ideal cut diamonds. We have spent countless hours comparing the visual performance of the Eighternity™ Diamond to that offered by our Super Ideal Cut Diamonds and are happy to report that we find the diamonds to be comparable in terms of Brilliance, Dispersion and Scintillation. Setting aside the obvious difference in facet number and structure, it is our opinion that the primary difference between the two options is the manner in which light is reflected back towards the viewer (that's you by the way) with our Super Ideal Cut Diamonds offering more of a broad flash type of return while the Eighternity™ Diamond is more pin fire like a tight group of stars in a constellation. Either way, you can't lose.
