The definition of "Ideal"

The term "Ideal" is largely misused and misunderstood by the diamond industry...  The purpose of this page is to clarify our use of the term "ideal" as it is used on this site and within our Private Reserve inventory listing.

The term "Ideal" as used in our Private Reserve and on this site, refers to any round brilliant cut diamond that has been cut to ideal proportions as determined by either the American Gem Society Laboratory or our own OGI Mega Scope computerized proportions analysis.  In addition, Polish and Symmetry ratings must be GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal for us to consider a diamond "Ideal".  We do not consider diamonds graded by the GIA or AGS as having Very Good or Good polish and symmetry to be "Ideal Cut"...

"GIA-0XX" as used on our Private Reserve represents a diamond graded by the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory as having Excellent polish and symmetry AND which received a zero ideal cut rating during our OGI Mega Scope computerized proportions analysis.  "Excellent" is the highest polish and symmetry grade available from the GIA Laboratory and is extremely difficult to achieve.

"AGS Ideal" represents a diamond graded by the AGS Laboratory as having "AGS Ideal" polish, symmetry, and proportions...  This would result in an overall "Cut Grade" rating of "AGS Ideal 0" by the AGS Laboratory as seen on their Diamond Quality Document [DQD].  "AGS Ideal" is the highest rating available from the AGS Laboratory.  Members of the diamond trade generally refer to such diamonds by the slang term "triple zero" however this term is actually misleading and incorrect.  By AGS grading standards a "triple zero" ideal cut diamond would be one cut to AGS Ideal Zero proportions and which has D color (zero) and Flawless Clarity (zero).  The reason that many diamond dealers incorrectly refer to an AGS Ideal 0 cut diamond as an "AGS-000" or "Triple Zero" stone is because in order to have an Overall Cut Rating of AGS Ideal 0 the three parameters that contribute to the Overall Cut Grade (polish, symmetry and proportions) must all receive a zero rating, so three zero cut ratings as it were... Zero Polish, Zero Symmetry and Zero Proportions...  Now you can see where the confusion comes from and now you can better separate the dealers who "know" from the dealers who do not simply by the terminology that they choose to use.

It is important to note that the AGS parameters for the ideal cut proportions rating is the tightest in the industry and is different than "European Ideal" which allows for broader proportions and it is different from the concept of the 60/60 ideal which is anything but...  Many "Tolkowsky Cut" and "European Ideal Cut" diamonds will register as low as AGS-2 Very Good on the AGS Proportions Scale and a diamond with a 60% Total Depth and a 60% Table Diameter could have an overall proportions rating anywhere from AGS-2 Very Good all the way down to AGS-10 Very Poor!  If a diamond is listed as "GIA-0XX" or "AGS Ideal 0" in our Private Reserve, it is a True Ideal Cut Diamond which has been carefully hand selected for its incredible brilliance, dispersion and scintillation.  We guarantee it.
